Experiments based on FT-ICR mass spectrometry provide conclusive evide
nce for the operation of an alternative mechanism of electrophilic aro
matic substitution occurring within the complex formed upon addition o
f gaseous arenium ions to a variety of proelectrophiles, including alk
yl halides, alcohols, epoxides, esters and diazoalkanes. The factors a
ffecting the efficiency of the unconventional substitution are examine
d in the light of the kinetic results of the FT-ICR experiments.
