During routine placement of a subclavian central venous catheter for c
ancer chemotherapy, a sheath was inadvertently placed into the aortic
arch, through the left lung. We describe a technique for transthoracic
compression of the aortic injury using the sheath in conjunction with
an occlusion balloon catheter.
