Abstract
The feeding of sows with fresh summer-squash and summer-squash silage is reported. Sows like both kinds of this food. The silage contains 16 6 g crude protein and 162 g crude fibre/kg dry matter. In particular t he high Ca2+-content (32 g/kg DM) of this material should be mentioned . The nitrate concentration of leaves and caulinesare is with 750 mg/k g rather high. The high water content as well as the high concentratio ns of minerals will probably limit the use of this plant for feeding. The silage is appropriate for non-lactating sows.
