Liquid holdup and electric resistivity in an irrigated packed bed for
scrap melting with a high-frequency induction furnace was examined by
using model experiments. In the measurement of liquid holdups, the con
tact angle between liquid and particles in the packed bed was controll
ed above 90 degrees, and the inner wall of the packed bed was lined wi
th a sheet of regularly arranged hemispherical convexity for eliminati
ng wall effect. In the measurement of electric resistivity, molten woo
d's metal was irrigated to packed beds of graphite or iron particles.
As the results, two empirical formulate were obtained as follows; For
static and dynamic holdups epsilon(t,s)=0.181 Cp(m)(-0.458)Ga(m)(-0.02
18), )=1.58x1.0(5)Re(m)(0.268)Cp(m)(-2.16)Ga(m)(-0.526) For electric r
