Abstract
It is proved that for each compact (bordered) surface Sigma and each i
nteger k there is a constant N with the following property: If Gamma i
s a family of pairwise non-homotopic dosed curves on Sigma such that a
ny two curves from Gamma intersect in at most k points, then Gamma con
