From 1985 to 1991, a massively parallel architecture has been develope
d in the Asynchronous Processor Network project (APN). Organized as a
2-D network, cells were designed as a trade-off between complexity and
computing performances. Based on a 0.8 mu m CMOS technology, a circui
t prototype was realized including 64 cells. During the development of
the cellular machine, several novel aspects were considered as the si
mplicity of cells architecture and a complete test and fault-tolerance
strategy.
