A retrospective study was made of the survival of 216 patients who sta
rted treatment for end stage renal disease with intermitent peritoneal
dialysis or hemodialysis in the Nephrology service in Lenin Hospital,
Holguin from January 1986 to March 31 of 1994 using the Kaplan-Meier
system. The most frequent etiologies of chronic renal failure were hyp
ertensive nephropathy (32 %), primary glomerulopathy (20 %) and diabet
es mellitus (15,3 %). Overall survival was 69 % after one, year and 33
% after seven years. Survival of patients who received a kidney allog
raft was 94 % at the end oi the first year from the begining in dialys
is treatment compared with 55 % for those who where not transplanted.
An 82 % survival was found in transplanted patientes one year after tr
ansplantation and 54 % after time years. Infections were the first cau
se of death in non, transplanted patients. We concluded that the resul
ts of the dialysis treatment in our Hospital are not the best and we m
ust try to increase the number of kidney transplants in our country. W
e must also improve the control in the primary care system of diseases
that can lead to chronic renal failure, to reduce the number of patie
nts who come to an end stage renal disease.
