Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is an important form of chronic li
ver disease that has the appearance of alcoholic hepatitis on biopsy b
ut occurs in the absence of alcohol use. it is a frequent cause of chr
onically elevated serum aminotransferase levels, but surgical studies
and autopsy results suggest that it may not always be associated with
biochemical evidence of chronic liver injury. NASH has been found to c
ause progressive liver fibrosis and ultimately cirrhosis and death in
some patients. The diagnosis is established by liver biopsy in the pro
per clinical setting, and the mainstay of treatment is weight loss in
those patients who are obese.
