L. Szeredi et al., FOAL DISEASES CAUSED BY RHODOCOCCUS (CORY NEBACTERIUM) EQUI IN A HUNGARIAN HORSE STOCK, Magyar allatorvosok lapja, 51(8), 1996, pp. 488-494
During the gross-pathological and bacteriological investigation of the
organs of three (two Holstein and a Hungarian Half-blood) foals origi
nated from a Hungarian horse stock with 110 horses, lymphadenitis of p
ulmonary, mediastinal and mesenteric lymph nodes with granuloma format
ion and caseation, as well as peritonitis and ulcerous enteritis in th
e small and large intestines (Figs 1 to 5 and Fig. 8). Based on the in
terstitial, interalveolar pneumonia found during the histopathological
investigations, besides the bacteriological infection, a viral infect
ion was also supposed. Bacteria coloured by PAS and Brown-Brenn stain
and non-coloured by Ziehl-Neelsen stain were found mostly intracellula
r (Figs 6 and 7). In relation with the prevention, the authors have po
inted out the importance of proper feeding and management, as well as
the prevention of viral infections. More important clinical, epizootio
logical and pathological knowledge found in the international literatu
re have been briefly reported together with the possibilities of treat
ment. From pathological point of view new data have been furnished to
the histogenesis of the enteral form of the disease.
