Electron paramagnetic resonance investigations of both ammonia and ani
line copper(II) complexes revealed stronger exchange interactions in t
he CuCl2 . 2NH(3) crystal lattice than in the lattice of the aniline c
omplex. The crystal lattice of CuCl2 . 2NH(3) may be considered as a s
ystem of infinite chain links with two halide bridges between adjacent
copper atoms and two ammonia ligands in axial positions. In CuCl2 . 2
(aniline) the halide bridges are broken, so the interaction between co
pper ions becomes negligible and the structure of the aniline complex
exhibits lower symmetry.
