A method for the rapid quantitative determination of 2,4,6-trinitrotol
uene (TNT) is described. This method uses a Barringer Ionscan, an inst
rument based on ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) technology, as a detec
tor. IMS is usually employed to provide semiquantitative results in a
very short analysis time, An extensive statistical analysis of quantit
ative results has been carried out for this study, and a linear respon
se between 300 pg and 5000 pg TNT has been characterized, Detection of
TNT within 0.2-1.0% of the true value was obtained with this method.
