Competitive iron-mediated cycloaddition of butadiene with butadiene ve
rsus cycloaddition of butadiene with alkynes in Fe(C4H6)(2)(+)L (L=C2H
2, C3H4) (propyne)) complexes in the gas phase, observed using Fourier
transform mass spectrometry (FTMS), is described. The preference for
[4+2] cycloaddition between 1,3-butadiene and alkynes over butadiene/b
utadiene cycloaddition is observed. Reactions of Fe(C4H6)(2)(+) with l
abeled ethyne and propyne, collision-activated dissociation (CAD) stud
ies, reaction kinetics, and their branching ratios are discussed.
