Vb. Baranov et al., ON THE INTERACTION OF INTERPLANETARY SHOCK-WAVES WITH A STATIONARY SHOCK-WAVE IN THE SOLAR-WIND - OBLIQUE MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMIC INTERACTION, Astronomy letters, 22(4), 1996, pp. 555-561
The solution of the classical problem of a two-dimensional magnetohydr
odynamic interaction between two shock waves (the angle between the in
teracting waves and the inclination of the magnetic field are arbitrar
y) obtained by Barmin and Pushkar' (1990, 1991) is applied to the prob
lem of the interaction between interplanetary shocks (IPS) and a stati
onary shock produced by deceleration of the solar wind (or the termina
tion shock). As a stationary background for the physical phenomenon un
der consideration, a self-consistent axisymmetric model of the interac
tion of the solar wind with a supersonic two-component (plasma + hydro
gen atoms) flow of the local interstellar medium (Baranov and Malama 1
993, 1995) is adopted. Distributions of the plasma parameters as funct
ions of the dimensionless parameters that determine the solution of th
e problem are calculated. Velocities of the postinteraction terminatio
n and interplanetary shocks are calculated. Some conclusions are drawn
about the eventual interpretation of experimental data from spacecraf
t exploring the outer regions of the solar system.
