The microstructure of a high-strength cupronickel alley has been analy
sed using a variety of techniques, and the main strengthening phase is
identified as an ordered phase with Ll(2) structure, based on Ni3Al.
This phase is coherent with the copper-based matrix, and has a constra
ined misfit of -0.68%, as measured by X-ray diffraction techniques. Th
e implications of these findings are discussed. Copyright (C) 1996 Els
