Based on IR spectroscopic studies of the reaction products, a mechanis
m for olefin hydroformylation in the presence of a cobalt carbonyl-pyr
idine complex as a catalyst precursor was proposed. The equilibrium co
nstants of elementary steps and the rate constant of the rate-determin
ing step at 140 degrees C were calculated.
