The data on the reaction of palladium and copper catalysts with hydrog
en reveal deep reduction of the support, attributed to hydrogen spillo
ver. A relationship between the relative extent of metal reduction in
M/Sr1-xZr1-yO3-alpha samples (M = Cu, Pd) and the concentration of NO3
2--radical-anions is established, nitrate radical ions being stabilize
d in the support matrix during synthesis of the catalysts. The role of
electron transfer in hydrogen spillover is discussed.
