Abstract
This paper begins with a discussion of various identity threats in the social-political arena that bring the group aspect of our personal id entity to the forefront. It then goes on to describe the development o f religious group identity and its relation to violence between religi ous groups, with the Hindu-Muslim violence in India as in main illustr ation.
