The chromatographic behavior of alkali and alkaline-earth metals on a
column packed with iminodiacetic acid-bonded silica is studied. The in
fluence of concentrations of mineral and organic acids on the retentio
n is investigated. The optimum composition of the mobile phase for the
simultaneous separation of alkali and alkaline-earth metals (1.25 x 1
0(-3) M of perchloric acid and 2.06 x 10(-3) M of 2,6-pyridinedicarbox
ylic acid) is selected. The limits of detection for indirect conductom
etric detection are from 1 to 7 mg/L. The procedure developed is appli
ed to the analysis of several real water samples.
