Mg. Pereira et Mb. Goncalves, AN EXPERT-SYSTEM FOR TEACHING NUMERICAL SERIES, Zeitschrift fur angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 76, 1996, pp. 499-500
This paper explores the use of micro-computers in the teaching of Math
ematics, a practice which is not very common. To this end, an expert s
ystem was developed. An expert system is a computer program that emula
tes the behavior of a human expert in a well-defined, narrow domain of
knowledge. An expert system for teaching numerical series was devised
in this study, Tests and criteria to determine divergence and converg
ence are applied to numerical series. The system is capable of providi
ng specific conclusions regarding the character of a given numerical s
eries. The consultation sessions are very complete, allowing the stude
nt to learn the theory and the practice of numerical series, The exper
t system can encapsulate some of the expertise used teachers in Mathem
atics classes.
