Many practical problems lead to mathematical models of initial-boundar
y-value problems for parabolic differential equations or of similar st
ructures. One of these models is solved by an algorithm based on the n
umerical method of lines: after semidiscretization in spatial directio
n we get time-dependent initial-value problems for ordinary differenti
al or differential-algebraic equations, the numerical solution of whic
h is performed by suitable solvers. Details of the solution process an
d numerical results are presented for some application. The technical
parameters, the stiffness of the equations remaining after spatial dis
cretization and computational aspects of the algorithm are also discus
sed.
