Mjn. Vanstralen et al., DIRECTIONAL DECOMPOSITION OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC-FIELD IN INTEGRATED-OPTICS, Zeitschrift fur angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 76, 1996, pp. 569-570
In integrated optics there is a growing interest in the use of parabol
ic wave equations for modeling electromagnetic waves in waveguiding st
ructures (e.g. Beam Propagation Method). In this field, particular att
ention must be paid to the wide-angle approximation, (multiple) back r
eflections and polarization interaction. To account for these we consi
der the technique of the directional wave field decomposition, which h
as been recently developed for acoustic waves in fluids(1). The latter
method malt es use of the pseudo-differential operator calculus. In t
his paper the construction of optimal sparse matrix representations fo
r pseudo-differential operators will be discussed.
