Abstract
An infinitely often differentiable function on the real line with comp act support is introduced. The behavior as well as some of its propert ies are discussed. Subspaces of C[a,b] generated by this function and its translates possess desirable properties for approximation purposes . These spaces include polynomials up to a definite degree.
