Abstract
A cost effective repeaterless system with remote pumping in a single f ibre is reported. Omitting dedicated pump fibres, 490 km transmission is demonstrated at 2.488 Gbit/s with a fibre loss of 87.4 dB. The syst em employs a remote preamplifler and dispersion compensating fibre, bu t no remote post-amplifier.
