The Flower Gardens Ocean Research Project (FGORP), which serves as a f
oundation on which to build interactive science programs between priva
te industry and the academic research community, is a unique and valua
ble opportunity for students and academic research professionals. It i
s dependent upon, one-the support and generosity of private industry p
articipants, and two-the ability of the students and research professi
onals to integrate themselves into the offshore working environment in
an efficient, safe, and pleasing manner. It is a program that can exi
st only as long as it is a rewarding and pleasant experience for all i
nvolved. Host companies have reserved the right to approve research ac
tivities that take place on their property. Typically they review a pr
oposed project in terms of Safety. The projects likely impact on daily
operations of the platform. Space requirements. Mechanical and electr
ical requirements. Timing. To facilitate efficient communications and
implementation, host companies require that a process of approval begi
n in the office of the FGORP coordinator. The purpose of the Coordinat
or is to increase efficiency of implementation, and to promote expansi
on and longevity of the FGORP program. As such, he/she serves both the
host companies and the scientific community.
