Abstract
Obesity has a genetic component that accounts for a significant percen tage of the risk for this disorder. Studies are underway in humans and animal models to identify the genetic mechanisms controlling risk for the development of obesity. Identification of these genes will facili tate diagnosis and perhaps lead to new behavioral or pharmacologic app roaches to prevent and treat obesity.
