Jwg. Vanputten et al., ASSOCIATION BETWEEN WEGENERS GRANULOMATOSIS AND STAPHYLOCOCCUS-AUREUSINFECTION, The European respiratory journal, 9(9), 1996, pp. 1955-1957
Two patients are presented with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) and lowe
r respiratory tract infections with Staphyloccus aureus (SA). It is po
sulated that there is a relationship between the infection and the ind
uction or relapse of the disease. We suggest that bronchoalveolar lava
ges should be performed in cases of suspected WG to identify SA-infect
ions. The co-existence of WG and SA support the reported beneficial ef
fects of sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, but needs further evaluation i
n patients with and without SA-infection of the airways.
