Thin metallic titanium foil was used instead of titanium powders in Al
-Ti alloy to check the possibility whether bulk materials could be app
lied to mechanical alloying (MA) processing for overcoming material li
mitations. On the basis of the results of microstructural evolution an
d structure examination by X-ray analysis, the final MA powders in the
powder-foil system of an Al-Ti alloy exhibit structures almost identi
cal to those in the powder-powder systems. The low-energy ball milling
processing needed to produce an ultrafine dispersion of fractured tit
anium particles in aluminum powder particles was found to be reached a
fter a milling time of 200 h.
