This paper briefly reviews the prediction methods used in structural a
coustics and presents a few concepts relative to active control of the
vibrations and noise radiated by structures using distributed piezoel
ectric actuators and sensors. The first part describes an investigate
strategy for predicting the vibrations, internal noise and noise radia
ted by complex structures in the low-, medium- and high-frequency doma
ins. This introduces the different frequency domains and the appropria
te prediction methods for each domain, the concept of structural compl
exity, its role in dynamic behavior and its modeling. The second part,
on active control, describes the principles of distributed active con
trol in the case of closed-loop broad-band modal control. Finally, the
paper concludes by reviewing the current limitations of prediction me
thods and a few of the problems arising for distributed active control
.
