In a total of 312 intubated patients the cervical spine - from the atl
anto-occipital joint to and including the last cervical vertebra - as
well as the temporomandibular joints were submitted to a segmental man
ual examination prior to and following intubation. In 8 patients, new
cervical spinal blocks were demonstrable. All of the temporomandibular
joints were freely mobile, It was shown that although blocks affectin
g the cervical spine are typical occurrences under endotracheal anaest
hesia, they are usually only mild complications.
