H-1-NMR was used to monitor concentration of dimethyl sulfoxide in art
icular cartilage on patellae from pigs as a function of time and tempe
rature. The resulting diffusion coefficient was 1.12x10(-5).cm(2)/sec
at 23 degrees C with an Arrhenius activation energy of 0.95 kcal/mol.
Concentration profiles in cartilage of various thicknesses were calcul
ated as a practical aid for the design of protocols to cryopreserve ar
ticular cartilage.
