Rp. Harinarain et al., PERSPECTIVES OF THE APPLICATION OF BIOTEC HNOLOGICAL METHODS IN SELECTION OF THE SUGARCANE SACCHARUM-OFFICINARUM L FOR RESISTANCE TO HYPOXIA, Izvestia Akademii nauk SSSR. Seria biologiceskaa, (4), 1996, pp. 411-421
The possibility of obtaining somaclonal forms with increased resistanc
e to hypoxia was demonstrated on three clonal varieties of the sugarca
ne using cell selections on selective media. Two selective in vitro sy
stems were developed for selection of forms resistant to hypoxia. The
culture of sugarcane tissues can be used in the selection directed at
the increase of resistance to hypoxia. Sugarcane plants with increased
tolerance to root waterlogging were first obtained from the callus li
nes, selected for resistance to the toxic analogue of methionine, ethi
onine, and to anaerobic conditions. These plants can also be used in t
raditional selection as donors of such a resistance.
