THE DIATOM TYPES OF MANGUIN,EMILE .2. VALIDATING DESCRIPTIONS AND DESIGNATION OF TYPES FOR THE NEW-CALEDONIA SPECIES

The 61 taxa described as new by Emile Manguin in his 1962 paper on dia toms from New Caledonia lacked Latin descriptions and type designation s; they are therefore invalid according to the International Code of B otanical Nomenclature. We provide Latin descriptions for Manguin's tax a and, based on his original designations on his slides, identify holo types. Holotypes for several species were not indicated by Manguin, an d we have therefore designated holotypes from Manguin's slides. Specim ens of nine taxa could not be found, and Manguin's illustrations are d esignated as holotypes for three of them where original material has b een lost. The remaining six taxa could not be located in the extant Ma nguin material, and they have been left undescribed. English translati ons of the original French descriptions are also provided.
