Silanols containing one or more Si-OH groups are useful synthons for t
he preparation of metallasiloxanes with novel Si-O-M frameworks. Recen
t reports from our laboratory in this area were centred on the synthes
is of stable organosilanetriols and their use as building-blocks for t
he preparation of a wide range of metallasiloxanes soluble in organic
solvents and incorporating various transition metals and main group el
ements in the siloxane framework. In addition to single crystal X-ray
structural investigations, infrared and Si-29 NMR spectral techniques
provide useful information for elucidating the structures and type of
metallasiloxanes formed in these reactions. This article summarizes th
e results of studies of the TR and Si-29 NMR spectra of these compound
s.
