Atmospheric and hydrographic parameters over Chilka lagoon are studied
from March 1987 to February 1988. Salinity, water temperature and dep
th exhibit large temporal and spatial variations. Wind field is observ
ed to be highly variable during the period of observation. Momentum fl
ux and the sensible and latent heat fluxes are more during pre-monsoon
and monsoon periods. Thermal instability (water warmer than air) prev
ails on most of the days during the period of observation and is inver
sely related to wind speed. Comparative study of the important surface
features between 1986 and 1987 for the months, June and September, sh
ow significant interannual and interseasonal variability.
