The benthic fauna of the Kayamkulam backwater and adjacent sea compose
d mainly of foraminiferans, polychaetes, nematodes, amphipods. isopods
and bivalves. The population density varied between 900-76000/m(2) in
October and 1020-60000/m(2) in May. Foraminiferans were the predomina
nt group in the sea and in the marine zone of the backwater. Polychaet
es ranked second in terms of the species composition followed by bival
ves. Amphipods were the predominant group in the upper reaches of the
backwater.
