Abstract
The second order molecular susceptibility, beta, of twelve arylmercuri c nitrophenylacetylides which possess a linear molecular configuration has been determined with solvatochromism technique to be in the order of 10(-29) esu. There is no close relationship between the electronic property of the substituent (D) and the value of beta, indicating tha t an effective intramolecular charge-transfer from D to nitro group do es not exist. lambda(max) of all the compounds in electronic spectra a re in the range of 310 +/- 7 nm, which are over 60 nm shorter than tho se of some other conjugated organic molecules which possess similar be ta value. The condition and limitation of using this technique to dete rmine beta of organometallic molecules are discussed.
