Twenty-four high-level managers, working with information administrati
on, from twenty large organizations of different kinds, were interview
ed about how they perceived information administration and present inf
ormation administrative practices. ADP-managers saw greater promise in
the concept of information administration than did information manage
rs. Many informants were concerned that planned information administra
tion could lead to control and restriction of the information flow rat
her than to a supportive and facilitative approach. Furthermore, most
informants reported various deficiencies in current information handli
ng practices. The consequences of the results for improved IT use in o
rganizations are discussed.
