Optical and electrooptical properties of a number of thermotropic meso
genic aromatic polyesters were studied in dilute solutions by means of
flow birefringence and electrical birefringence. Flow birefringence i
nvolves large-scale mobility, whereas equilibrium electrical birefring
ence is associated with local reorientation of polar, anisotropic meso
genic fragments in the polymer chain. The optical and electrooptical c
haracteristics of the studied aromatic polyesters correlate with aniso
tropic and dipolar architecture of their macromolecules.
