The structural and magnetic properties of are-melted Y(2)Fe(17-x)M(x)C
(y) (M = Ga, Al and Si; x = 0-4, y = 0-3) compounds have been investig
ated For M = Ga, the Th2Zn17-type structure was maintained in the allo
ys up to x = 4, y = 2, but only up to x = 4, y = 1 and x = 2, y = 1 fo
r M = Al and Si, respectively. For the Y(2)Fe(,17-x)M(x) compounds, th
e substitution of certain amounts of Ga, Al and Si increases the Curie
temperature (T-C) and the saturation magnetization (M(s)). For the Y(
2)Fe(17-x)M(x)C(y) compounds, the value of M(x) decreases monotonicall
y with x, although the effect of x on T-C is different, depending on t
he sites the elements (M = Ga, Al and Si) occupy. The contribution of
the Fe-Fe sublattice exchange interaction and magnetic dilution due to
the nonmagnetic element substitution determine the T-C and M(s) of th
ese alloys.
