By calculations within the framework of the ab initio electron theory
in local-density approximation it is shown that hydrogen isotopes occu
py the hexahedral or the tetrahedral interstitial sites in beryllium.
The energetically most favourable position in the tetrahedron thereby
is not the geometrical centre, but a site very close to the hexagonal
basal plane. The calculated heat of solution for tritium on the hexahe
dral site is 0.8 +/- 0.1 eV.
