Excess volumes, excess viscosities, and excess Gibbs energies of activ
ation for viscous flow of binary liquid mixtures of formamide with (C-
1-C-5) alkan-1-ols have been calculated from the densities and viscosi
ties measured at 298.15 K over the whole composition range. The viscos
ity-mole fraction data of the five systems were used to test various e
mpirical laws proposed to describe the viscosity of mixtures: the one-
parameter models by Nissan-Grunberg, Hind-McLaughlin-Ubbelohde and Tej
a-Rice, and the two-parameter models by McAllister, Heric, Lobe, and C
ao-Fredenslund-Rasmussen were tested. All correlations were in good ag
reement except that of Teja-Rice. Deviations with respect to ideal beh
aviour were interpreted in terms of specific interactions between unli
ke molecules.
