The surface-diffusion process of tungsten atoms and clusters on magnes
ium oxide (001) surfaces is observed directly by high-resolution elect
ron microscopy (HREM) with time resolution of 1/60 sec. It is found fr
om the data reproduced from video-tape images that the diffusion proce
ss is classified into a short-jump process to neighboring sites and a
long-jump process over a l-nm distance. The present observation indica
tes a new potential for the study of the surface-diffusion process wit
h HREM.
