This paper provides a survey of the present state of knowledge of the important influences on the elastic lateral buckling and strengths of laterally unsupported beams, and of methods of design. It then outline s a number of areas where knowledge is incomplete under the headings o f cross-section types, materials, structural forms, combined loading, analysis, experiment, design, and education.
