Abstract
This paper discusses the problem of estimating the size of a source po pulation from a couple of matched, disarticulated body parts. Maximum likelihood estimation and the construction of a confidence interval ar e described. This problem is connected to the ecological problem of es timating the number of species in a sampled community.
