Physical and fuel properties of yellow nut-sedge tuber (Cyperus escule
ntus L.) oil were measured to determine its potential fuel value. The
viscosity, specific gravity, energy content and iodine value of nut-se
dge oil were comparable to those of soybean, sunflower and rapeseed oi
ls. Nut-sedge oil has a great potential as a biodiesel fuel. The phosp
horus content of this oil was very high, whereas the peroxide value wa
s very low compared to other vegetable oils. Nut-sedge oil had lower c
loud point and pour point temperatures than other vegetable oils. Howe
ver, the fatty acid profile was similar to these oils.
