Abstract
The effect of mechanical milling on the structure and magnetic propert ies of Nd16Fe76B8 has been studied. Decomposition during milling was f ound to occur via a two-stage reaction involving partial disordering a nd amorphization of the Md2Fe14B phase, followed by the formation of a lpha-Fe. Magnetic behaviour was found to depend on the microstructure developed during milling. Exchange spring behaviour was observed in pa rtially amorphized samples. The influence of annealing on the structur e and magnetic properties of milled powders was also investigated.
