We have grown superconducting thin films of YBa2Cu3O7 (Y-123) on Pr0.6
7Ca0.33MnO3 (PCMO) buffer layers and PCMO overlayers on Y-123 thin fil
ms using pulsed laser ablation deposition. For both sets of films belo
w 50 K, the Y-123 layer is superconducting and the zero-field cooled P
CMO layer is insulating. The application of a magnetic field of 8 T re
sults in an insulator-metal transition in the PCMO layer. This field-i
nduced conducting state is stable in zero magnetic field at low temper
ature. The PCMO layer can be returned to an insulating state by anneal
ing above 100 K. This opens the way for the construction of devices in
corporating these oxide materials in which the electronic properties o
f key components such as the substrate or the barrier layer can be swi
tched in a controlled way by the application of a magnetic field.
