A second occurrence of the X-sire-vacant tourmaline foitite has been f
ound in a complex pegmatite dike at San Piero in Campo, Elba. Foitite
occurs as acicular and hairlike fibrous crystals associated with quart
z and feldspars in miarolitic cavities in the medium-grained part of a
complex tourmaline-bearing pegmatite. The fibers are unzoned and have
the composition square(0.63)Na(0.36)Ca(0.01)(Fe1.52Mn0.19Mg0.08Al 0.8
6Ti0.01Li0.33)Al6Si6O18(BO3)(3)(OH)(4), virtually identical to that re
corded for foitite from southern California by MacDonald et al. (1993)
