This paper describes an investigation to evaluate the properties and u
ses of the different casting materials available for small animals. Af
ter a consideration of the properties that make an 'ideal cast', clini
cally relevant tests were performed on tubular casts of the various pr
oducts. No single product demonstrated consistent superiority by all t
he criteria. Ail the products tested can be useful in a variety of sit
uations, and suggestions for their uses are set out.
