A patient with chronic disseminated histoplasmosis was followed after
successful treatment with amphotericin B for 10 years until his death
from chronic obstructive airways disease. Necropsy showed that Histopl
asma organisms could still be identified in the adrenal and pancreatic
abscesses, through none appeared viable on electron microscopy. Excis
ion of such abscesses should be considered in view of their potential
as a reservoir of organisms.
